Story

Brandi Irvon, the artist and I grew up together in Benton Harbor, MI. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Brandi approached me about developing and identity for The Black Soil Project. When I inquired what exactly The Project was, he explained it simply and quite eloquently: The Black Soil Project is the story and celebration of people like us – people that originated from nothing but soared beyond our dreams.

Having the advantage of being a Benton Harbor native, the identity is the result of a deep collaboration between two friends that spans decades. It is an integration between Brandi’s songs and my visualization of the project title and what it means. It serves as a symbol and reminder (especially during uncertain times) that if people feel as if they’re nothing-from-nothing, that they are beautiful and full of limitless potential by virtue of being “from nothing”. Black Soil.
